Republic FC defeat Charleston Battery
July 30, 2022 – United Soccer League (USL) Championship – Sacramento Republic FC press release
MOUNT PLEASANT, SC — Republic FC picked up three league points for the first time since June 25 on Saturday, putting in an effective performance in the attack against Charleston Battery. Sacramento shone in another all-team effort, rising to take control of a tough assignment after a demanding night Wednesday at the US Open Cup.
Luther Archimede led the way with three shots and a goal and an assist apiece, while Emil Cuello, Matt LaGrassa and Zeiko Lewis all scored their first league tallies this season. Cuello grabbed an assist on Archimedes’ score, and LaGrassa’s 48th-minute effort became the 10th goal of his professional career. The Quails’ four scores were their highest since April 7, and the first time all season they have scored more than three in the league.
Sacramento started the marathon in just 90 seconds. In his first game against his former club, Zeiko Lewis went on and put pressure on the Charleston defense line. After his first attempt was saved, the ball found the feet of Emil Cuello and Rafa Jauregui, who each attempted attempts that were saved by the Charleston keeper.
The hosts opened the scoring just before the 5 minute mark, hitting a rebound which bounced into space. The deficit for Sacramento would not last long, however, as the club equalized from a set piece in the 16th minute. Emil Cuello got his header on a great serve from a Nick Ross corner, and his attempt was deflected by a Charleston defender and into the net.
Just before the first-half hydration break, Luther Archimede found his third goal of the season to put Sacramento ahead. After running on a ball played overhand by Emil Cuello, his powerful shot from the right was no match for Charleston’s Hugo Fauroux in goal. The scoring was his first in open play this season, with his last two each coming from the penalty spot.
Augustine Williams brought Battery level just before the break. A superb save from Carlos Saldaña bounced into space for the striker to put it in the net. However, the tie would not last long as Sacramento fought back when Luther Archimede found Zeiko Lewis at the top of the box, who netted one against his former club for his second score of the season.
Changes for Sacramento on the hour mark brought some defensive reinforcements. Except for a trio of chances just after the 75th minute, Charleston remained quiet to the tune of a single shot on target in the second half.
Republic FC continue a run of five games in 14 days next Wednesday, when the club travel to the South West to face New Mexico United for the second time this season. The match kicks off at 6:00 p.m. PT and will be broadcast live on Antenna TV 40.2, FOX40.com and the FOX40 app, and streamed on ESPN+. Republic FC will return home on August 6 against Rio Grande Valley FC.
