Raleigh Greenway Trail to Close for 6 Months for Repairs

RALEIGH, NC (WNCN) – The city of Raleigh has more than 100 miles of greenways to maintain. These trails occupy them all year round.

Lake Lynn Loop Trail is the latest greenway to undergo repairs with several pieces of equipment already staged on Tuesday as the city prepares for repairs to begin on Sunday.

“The trails, bridges and walkways are incredibly beautiful,” said Sue Southwick as she walked along the trail with her husband, Dave Southwick.

Walking with a baby and a dog is a new tradition for them.

“We just moved here in November from Vermont. We are just amazed by the park system and this one in particular,” Sue Southwick.

They don’t mind a few bumps in the trail along the way.

“Nothing is paved in Vermont. Everything is root. Everything is a bump for us, so it’s really spectacular,” said Dave Southwich.

This is one of the things the city hopes to fix over the next few months.

The entire east side, from the Lynn Road car park to the community center, will be closed from Sunday May 1 to November 1.

“There is never a good time to close greenways. We wish there had been but there really is no good time”

City of Raleigh project manager David Bender said the project would cut down trees to widen and repave the trail and improve drainage to prevent flooding. The million-dollar project is funded by a 2014 Parks Bond.

“Where all those roots lifted that pavement and caused those bumps in the trail, that would be our priority,” Bender said.

Properties on the east side of Lynn Lake will not have direct access to the Greenway Trail. Parking lots at the Lynn Lake Community Center on Ray Road and at the main trail access on Lynn Road will be open during construction.

John Luistero, who visits the parks monthly, is eagerly awaiting repairs.

“We have to repave. You see cracks and places where you can trip and that sort of thing,” Luistero said.

Uneven sidewalks and eroded edges can be tricky to navigate with his adult dog and pup in tow, but he’s making the most of it for now.

“With the lake and all that, it’s just a beautiful landscape,” John Luistero said.
