MORGANTOWN, WV — Three athletes from the West Virginia University track and field team competed at the 2022 Bell Canadian Track and Field Championships June 22-26 at McLeod Athletic Park in Langley, B.C. in Canada.

Ceili McCabe (3000m steeplechase), Sylvia Russell (3,000m steeplechase), Mikayla Lucki (1,500m) and Cassandra Williamson (800m) participated in the championships.

All-American, McCabe underlined the championship with a steeplechase victory. McCabe finished with a personal best 9:30.69. With her new record time, the native of British Columbia, Canada has a shot at qualifying for the World Championships with the Canadian national team.

“We had a very good performance at the Canadian Championships, said the coach Sean Clear said. “Ceili looked the best of all season. She won the championship with a big kick in tactical fashion. While the race turned out to be the best of a lifetime for Ceili, we are both convinced that she has more in her.”

The 2022 World Championships are set to take place in the United States for the first time in history. The championships will be held in Eugene, Oregon at Hayward Field July 15-24.

Additionally, Russell placed fifth in the Canadian Championships Obstacle Course Final. The native of Ajax, Ontario, Canada finished with a personal best 10:05.67.

Lucki competed in the 1,500 meter race, where she placed 10th overall in 4:23. The native of Toronto, Canada qualified for the final after a semi-final in 4:21.

“Sylvia also ran her lifetime record,” Cleary said. “Sylvia and Mikayla have completed a spectacular year. This year, we both helped them lead the team to NCAA cross country finals and outstanding performance on the track.”

Williamson placed 17th in the 800-meter semifinal. The native of Ajax, Ontario, Canada finished with a time of 2:07.14.

“Cassandra ran a solid race in the 800 meters but failed to make the final,” Cleary said. “She finished her first year in a redshirt after improving over the last few months. This performance makes her ready and confident for whatever the sport has in store for her in the future.”
