Annie Martha Spell Hills — Charleston
CHARLESTON – Annie Martha Spell Hills, daughter of Martha Hucks Spell and Paul Eldred Spell, passed away peacefully with her family by her side on Saturday, October 15, 2022 in Charleston. She was 103 years old.
She was born in Smoaks and lived for many years in Columbia and Orangeburg. She graduated from Columbia College with a degree in piano performance. She has coached many bands and served as director of many choirs, including Trenholm Road United Methodist, Bethel Presbyterian Church and Methodist Oaks. She and her husband John were founding members of Trenholm Road United Methodist where she organized the first choir. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma and in 2006 received the Order of the Palmetto. She was predeceased by her husband John Edward Hills, their daughter Reverend Martha Anne “Moffie” Andrews and their grandson John Spell Andrews. Funeral services will be held Saturday, October 29, 2022 at noon at Greenpond United Methodist Church, 7257 Augusta Highway, Smoaks, SC 29481. The family will greet visitors at 11 a.m. in the church sanctuary.
